I recently read an interesting article on BusinessKnowHow.com which outlined the 7 reasons why small businesses fail. The article also offered some useful insight on how to avoid these common pitfalls.

I have been running a home business since 2006 and I attribute much of my accomplishments to my ongoing pursuit of information and strategies that enable and empower me to succeed.  Some of what I read I discard, but often I read things that strike a cord and stimulate change in my own business. This particular article offers some valuable insight for small business owners, so I have decided to review each of the 7 reasons and provide my own reflections in the hope that it will help to guide other small business owners. Their mission is to lead a collaborative drive towards doping-free sport. For professional sports’ people and athletes this means that drug testing is, and will continue to be, a very real aspect of competing at the highest level.

One of the challenges faced by athletes is deciding whether or not the risk of taking nutritional supplements is worth the potential gains. To say that the list of banned and prohibited substances detailed on the WADA website is extensive would be an understatement! Even if an athlete does not intentionally use a banned substance, it is often difficult to determine whether the listed ingredients in an off-the-shelf nutritional product are banned or prohibited. This uncertainty can be compounded by the fact that not all products provide a comprehensive list of all of their ingredients and low quality products may even contain contaminated ingredients. Choosing Multivitamin and Multi-Mineral Products

As a health conscious individual, a recreational triathlete and a former healthcare professional, I am often asked for my opinions relating to nutritional supplements – particularly multivitamin and multi-mineral products.  I have been able to establish some credibility amongst my peers as I have managed to transform my own health and have been able to maintain my goal weight and endurance fitness for close to a decade.

It is my belief that supplementation, alongside a healthy diet is essential to maintain optimum health.  Setting any scientific research to one side for a moment, I personally believe that my sleep patterns, rate of recovery after exercise, immune system and alertness are all positively impacted by using multivitamins and multi-minerals.  I have taken them religiously since May 2006 and anticipate I will continue using them for the rest of my life! In today’s economic climate, it is important for us all to be open to new income opportunities. People working in the service industries are particularly vulnerable, because when their clients or customers become uncertain about their own financial futures, it is usually non-essential services that are first to be sacrificed.

Most health professionals find ways to generate additional income in their businesses. Looking back on my time working as a Personal Trainer, I used to have my own one-to-one clients, I used to deliver group exercise classes, I used to attend health seminars and I even did some health events in conjunction with the local council. Having different streams of income provided stability in my business, because if I lost a client then I could take on an extra class and vice versa. Continue reading

Running for Weight Loss

I read an article yesterday entitled: “running for weight loss – Is it a good way to burn fat?” and some of the views that were expressed concerned me a little!

Firstly, it was implied that actually exercise isn’t essential and that nutrition is the only important factor. We know this not to be the case for lasting health benefits.

Secondly, it compared different exercises like-for-like, based on the number of calories burned and didn’t seem to give any consideration to adaptations that occur in the body as a result of different types of exercise. You may have noticed that a runner’s physique is different to a triathlete’s and there are reasons for this.
